Unveiling Africa's Hidden Treasures: A Journey Through South Africa and Ghana
As the founder of Online Africa Network, my visits to South Africa and Ghana 2021 have been nothing short of eye-opening. These two nations, often misrepresented in global media, are continents of vast, untold opportunities waiting to be explored by the diaspora.
Upon setting foot in these countries, my mind raced, comparing the long-held misconceptions with the vibrant reality before me. The key to unlocking Africa's potential, I discovered, lies in forging the right connections. Networking with well-respected individuals and companies from the diaspora who have already navigated the terrain – experiencing the good, the bad, and the ugly of emigrating, starting businesses, and adapting to cultural differences – proves invaluable.
What struck me most profoundly was the palpable sense of peace in the atmosphere, coupled with the abundance of business opportunities that don't require substantial initial investments. South Africa, in particular, is a fast-paced haven for entrepreneurs, professionals, families, and young people alike.
The synergy created by blending our skills with those of locals yields impressive results, especially when it comes to job creation. The entrepreneurial mindset and skills of the local population are assets waiting to be tapped.
What made South Africa special to me was visiting the first time to personally meet Mr Nelson Mandela at his home with a group of black individuals from the United Kingdom to present to him the diversity award which I was sponsored. Second visit was with my wonderful wife, mum and sister. (None of them wanted to come back to UK)
One of the most appealing aspects for business owners is the relatively relaxed regulatory environment compared to the United Kingdom. This flexibility allows for easier business navigation and growth. Beyond the professional sphere, the lifestyle in South Africa is a significant draw. With its outdoor-oriented culture, pleasant weather, and access to healthy, fresh food, it's particularly attractive for families looking to settle. Even my mother, visiting with me, found herself reluctant to return to the UK, having discovered a lifestyle reminiscent of her days in Jamaica – a testament to the country's appeal for retirees.
Ghana, on the other hand, holds a special allure for those in the diaspora seeking to connect with their roots. The similarities in food and culture with the Caribbean are immediately apparent, creating an instant sense of belonging. From the moment you arrive at the airport, you're likely to encounter fellow Caribbean diaspora members sharing their delight in finding a home away from home. landing there you do see and feel the strong sense of home. I did not want to come back to UK vibe again.
